He was bishop in Chur, Litomyšl and Olomouc, archbishop in Magdeburg, a chancellor of Charles IV.
In 1371 he founded an Augustinian monastery in Lanškroun, in front of the town walls on what is now the place of St Magdalene’s Church. Jelito provided for it from his own incomes and money. He appointed 12 friars, with a prior as their head. The Augustinian canons in Lanškroun had the duty to take care of 6 poor and sick persons until their death.
Petr Jelito was buried in a vault of the monastery he had founded. Later on his mortal remains were transferred to St Wenceslas’ Church.
